Grace Jones came back like the hurricane a couple of years ago.
But let’s remember how thing were 30 years ago.
Grace Jones’ carrier started as a model in Paris, but she quickly got bored of it. By the end of the seventies, it was about time to crack and smack all the “have to”s and just be herself, to express just her own ideas and emotions. Determined to sing and act, she shaved her head and signed a record deal with Island Records. She needed only three years to record three disco albums and transform into the NewYork club scene’s queen. Her first show was on New Years Eve in the famous Studio 54. Grace was soon crowned as a favorite Andy Warhol’s muse, although she herself has always preferred to be called a collaborator. In the begging of the eighties, Ms Jones met her best collaborator – the French artist Jean-Paul Goude with whom she collaborated on the invention of her distinctive image and on bringing up their son Paulo, 28, who is also a musician.“Jean-Paul saw my work and became a fan. And I saw his work and became a fan. Together we developed the GraceJones look”, says the singer. This is the heavy androgonous skyscraper (Grace is 179 cm tall) with high cheek bones andebony skin with blue velvet reflections, the exaggerated geometric shoulder pads, and of course the significant flat-top. A look of almost a machine with attitude.
The cover of Island life was quite impressive but as some would say impossible as well. In an interview Goude said about the picture: “Unless you are extraordinary supple, you cannot do the arabesque. The main point is that Grace couldn’t do it, and that’s the basis of my entire work, creating a credible illusion”. He photographed Jones in a variety of positions using boxes to hold up parts of her body and then combined the images in a montage that eventually became the amazing image that you see above. And that’s about a couple of years before Photoshop was invented. Wow!
The slice technique turned out to be a signature Jean Paul Goude technique. He did a similar photoshoot with Bjork in 2007.
And of course Grace is still amazing. 30 years later. You can see yourself. Following are some of her official photos and the cover of the latest album which is absolutely marvelous!
